Production of functionalized PHA for application in formulation of new nanomaterials


The objective is based on applying metabolic engineering strategies to design bacterial strains able to accumulate polyesters with functional groups in their chemical structure. Some bacteria are able to naturally polymerize (R)hydroxyacilCoA intermediates with different functional groups in their side chain, such as thioester or insaturated groups, using fatty acids as growth precursors that show similar modifications in their chemical structures. Besides, accumulation of functionalized metabolic intermediates will be favoured through metabolic and genetic manipulation at a systemic level of the routes of the central metabolism of the PHA producing bacteria Pseudomonas putida(Fig.3.).
